About the Project

Combating Sickle Cell Anemia in Jharkhand: A Collaborative Public Health Initiative is a multi-stakeholder program led by CSIR-Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CSIR-CCMB), in partnership with Tata Steel Foundation and the National Health Mission (NHM), Jharkhand. The project addresses the urgent health challenge posed by Sickle Cell Anemia—a hereditary blood disorder that disproportionately affects tribal populations in Jharkhand.

Focused on the districts of West Singhbhum, East Singhbhum, and Saraikela-Kharsawan, the initiative aims to screen over 200,000 individuals from high-risk groups—including women of reproductive age, adolescents, and newborns—over a two-year period. The objective is to enable early diagnosis, prevent transmission, and ensure timely access to healthcare and social entitlements such as disability certification.

At the heart of this effort is the implementation of a cost-effective and scalable screening method using dried blood spot (DBS) samples analyzed through PCR technology, developed in-house by CSIR-CCMB. A centralized testing hub has been set up in East Singhbhum to support high-throughput sample analysis and data coordination.

The Atal Incubation Centre – CCMB (implementing agency) is hiring the following
